9 ways to make Beaded Tassels & other Edge Beading

Beads bring an extraordinary beauty to garments and accessories, wherever they are added. You can add beads to the edges of your fabric as beaded tassels or as edge beading stitches. Some of the most common types are as below. 

Beaded Tassel -Method 1

This gives you the most simple tassels. String your thread with some beads according to the length you want for the tassel. I have taken 10.

Take the beads to the back of the thread (a little above the knot)

Come back and insert the needle through the beads in a reverse fashion, skipping the first and last beads. 

Now come back and insert the needle through the last one (no. 10 in my case) This will anchor the bead tassel. 

Your first single strand tassel is ready. 

Make several of these and attach to the fabric edge. You can attach one at a time too. 

Beaded Edge – Method 2 

This is a very simple beaded edge made by threading the needle with one bugle bead, one round bead and then another bugle bead. 

Go back to the back of the fabric very near to the outer edge of the round bead. This will make the whole bunch to stand upright. Make several of these along the edge

Edge Beading – Method 2

This is a beaded edge made before the hem is completed. It is made by threading the needle and thread with a sequin and a bead; insert the needle through the sequin to the back of the fabric ; Make these continuously along the hemline. After the beading is done fold the hemline to the back and stitch in place. 

Bead tassel – Method 3

This is a tassel made by threading the needle with 3 big round beads and then  lastly a small bead or a bugle bead. Come back with the needle through the second bead to the back of the fabric  passing through all the rest of the beads

Bead tassel – Method 4

This tassel is the easiest as it involves simply threading the needle with beads and  then inserting needle to the back of the fabric 1/2 inch or so from the starting so that a chain is formed. You can make this chain as long as you want ; you can also make the chains one inside the other , made so by starting the next chain inside the first one.

Bead tassel- Method 5

This tassel uses augmenting beads ( small, big, bigger, you get what I mean), and is made the same way that the previous one is.

Bead Edge  – Method 6

To make this beaded edge  bring up the needle and thread to the fabric top from the back of the fabric; Then thread three beads on the needle. Insert the needle back into the fabric some distance from the first point (two bead distance); Come up again two or thread near where you went down. Take the last bead through the needle and bring up the needle. This will give you your first edge motif.

Now onwards you will have to thread only two beads in the needle. Do the same thing you did earlier – ie Insert the needle back into the fabric some distance from the first point (two bead distance); Come up again two or thread near where you went down. Take the last bead through the needle and bring up the needle. Continue doing this for the beautiful edge of beads

Beaded tassel – Method 7

This tassel is made by threading the needle with beads and bugle beads alternatively . In the end thread three beads after the bugle bead. Bring the needle down through the bugle bead and through all other beads and continue to the back of the fabric

Beaded tassel – Method 8

This interconnected type of tassel is made by first making a loop with beads and then making the next loop connected with the first one by going through the bugle Bead as in the picture below

How to make this bead tassel

Make a loop with one bugle beard, 5 round beads one bugle bead,three round beads, one bugle beads, three round beads , one bugle bead and then five round beads ( In the picture I have mistakenly added one more bugle bead which results in a somewhat mis-shapened loop) Take the needle and thread through the top bugle bead to the back of the fabric ; You will get a nice loop

Start the next loop some distance from the first loop starting point – enough for the loop to expand into a diamond shape. Thread one bugle bead and five round beads.

Bring up the needle through the bugle bead in the first loop. This will connect the two loops. The bugle bead will be shared between the loops and forms the connecting chain

Continue threading the needle with rest of the loop as you did with the first loop; ie three round beads, one bugle bead, three round beads, one bugle bead and five round beads. 

Take the needle through the first bugle bead and take it to the back of the fabric
