Make a Headband that keeps hair in check

My kid gets up, brushes teeth, nibbles at her breakfast, and then goes to her new school – her bedroom. Online classrooms have made many things unnecessary for her – uniforms, school shoes, packed lunch, that mad rush to the school bus, and to my annoyance, tying hair. I have a hard time getting her to comb her hair for the class. This wide headband is my solution to this problem. The easy way out – hiding the thing that causes embarrassment; in our case, wayward hair.

And if you use pretty fabric as I did, it is the cutest hair accessory. Use a flowy lightweight fabric like chiffon, crepe, georgette for making this headband.

How to make a hair taming headband

This is a very wide headband that covers a lot of the head. Here is the tutorial on how to sew this headband easily.

Step 1

Cut out the fabric pieces needed for the headband. You also need 3/4 inch wide elastic.

16 inch by 12 inch fabric for main front part ; 3 inch by 12 inch fabric for the elastic casing — Cut out the fabric pieces for the front portion and for the casing for elastic

Step 2

Keep the long edges of your big fabric (A) and stitch together. You get a tube. Do the same for the other long fabric piece (B).

Fold your big tube by the middle. Make a stitch of about 3 inches on either side as in the picture below.

Step 3

Cut out 6 inch long elastic piece ( 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch wide)

Take the other tube and insert the elastic piece inside the fabric tube with a pin. Stitch the edges to secure the ends of the elastic.

Step 4

Place your main fabric right side up in front of you.

Keep one edge of this elastic casing on top of one edge of the main (A) fabric. Wrap the elastic casing with this (see picture below). Stitch the edges together to join them.

Flip it right side out – you will get the seam allowance neatly tucked inside. up.

Step 5

Do the same with the other edge, to complete your headband.

Use the headband as it is or you can add embellishments like a fabric flower, or beadwork or a knot with another fabric tube to make it prettier.

Embellishment ideas:

You should preferably be making this with a flowy soft thin fabric like chiffon, crepe or even stretch velvet. Sewing this hairband is a pretty beginner level project but these thin materials can prove a challenge for a beginner. Just make small stitches and be a little careful, that is all you need to do to successfully make this easy to make hairband for fly away hair.

My model/user of the headband does not have class today, so I cannot get her into the headband, and get a photo of it in action. She is still in her bedroom – it is just not her classroom today.
