Grey color – Different shades in fashion

Learn the names of different shades of grey color and how to decide on which grey color suits you according to your body and eyes.

Grey or Gray ( it can be spelled either, depending on where you are in the world) is one of the most neutral of all colors on earth – it figures, as it comes somewhere between the colors black and white.

In fashion and everywhere, Grey is perceived as the color of wisdom, dependability, practicality, and elegance. The brain is called ‘gray-matter’ for a reason. Some grey shades gives off a very refined and sophisticated vibe. Pale greys can look very peaceful. When you wear grey color you are percieved as hardworking and reliable.

But overdoing it or doing it the wrong way can box you as washed out, colorless, and even mousy. And maybe even depressing.

You cannot deny that Grey is one of the most versatile of all colors – Not just because there are so many shades of it. From the lightest of grey that can pass off as white to the darkest of grey that can pass of as black, you can have it in many many varieties.  It is versatile also because grey color can be paired with almost all colors and they all look nice. Most greys look lively and wonderful when paired with other bright colors.

Is Grey the color for you?

This depends on a lot of factors – most colors go well with grey but the important question is whether it will suit your skin and your lifestyle. The main consideration is the color of your skin and your skin tone.

If your skin tone is warm, grey is a very suitable color in your fashion choices. You can choose light greys. If you are very fair, dark greys suit you more than lighter greys. If you have dark skin, avoid greys with yellow undertones (like Tawney grey, greige)

Another consideration is your body type. If you are on the heavy side you may want to wear darker grey. The lighter grey can make the body look bigger.

Yet another cosideration is the eye color. If you have light coloured eyes (blue, hazel, light grey) you can go for light grey colors and if you have darker coloured eyes (brown, dark grey) go for dark grey. (Reference: Little dictionary of fashion, Christian Dior)

What colors look good with Grey?

I think Grey looks best with white, black and other shades of grey. And Indigo blue of denim. Other than that, it depends on the undertones (and personal prefernces)

If your grey is more blueish like Slate grey, it can look good with teak brown, seafoam, pink etc.

If your grey has more brown to it than grey, bright colors like red, yellow are good.
