I love looking at pictures of historical clothing in books. They are fascinating. Yes, even the togas of ancient Rome look so romantic.

But I guess it was not so romantic back then. There is a story of back breaking labor behind each and every garment. Without the modern advances and technology available today, clothing was expensive and a good looking garment was the privilege of the rich. So I feel very lucky that I have so many choices today as to what to wear. The variety and scope of types of clothes available to us are astounding.

Clothing Categories

Outer wear

The term for clothing designed for use outdoors. ; Also called overclothes. Includes all items ranging from Coats, Overcoats, Blazers, Capes, Jackets and Rainwear. They are mainly of these fabric types – Wool and wool blends, microfiber, leather and fur

Active wear 

Includes all clothes suitable for an active athletic lifestyle;The two types are real activewear (Active sports clothes – those worn for participating in active sports) and those worn as street styles.

Include fitness clothes like compression garments, crop tops, t shirts, jogging sets, unitards, bike shorts, leggings, Ski jackets, tennis shorts, windbreakers, sweat suits and jackets. All items ranging from Bodywear, Golfwear, Jog suits, Playwear, Skiwear, Sweatwear and Tenniswear are included.  

Swimwear

Evening wear

The term used for evening attire, usually gowns, for Women; also called formal wear and After-5 clothes.

Lounge wear

Shirts and blouses

Bottoms

Refers to a garment extending from the waist to the knee or ankle, covering each leg separately; Includes pants and trousers, Dress Pants, Casual Pants, Jeans and Corduroys

Sleep wear

Clothing  designed to be worn in bed like Pajamas, Night Shirts, Night Dresses, Nighties.

Resort wear

This includes clothing designed for use in Resorts or on Vacation;  refers to all items ranging from Shorts, Tanks, Swimwear and Beachwear.

Mourning wear

This depends on the country you are in. In some countries black is the color for mourning clothes. In some it is white. Usually mourning clothes means full black clothing. It can also be just an armband or a trim.

Afternoon dress

This is an umbrella term used to refer to day time social functions.

Dress clothes

Formal garments for men, particularly for evening like a tail coat or tuxedo.

Shapewear or Foundation garments

Garments worn under outer clothes to control and smooth the shape of the body.

Utility Clothing

This refers to clothing worn for specific purposes, such as work, outdoor activities, or other practical tasks.

This is a wool blanket worn as a wrap/coverlet

A line coat

A coat with an A line silhouette, as it is fitting at the shoulders and flared toward the hem. It usually ends near the fingertip.

A line skirt

A skirt which has an A line silhouette. This skirt has a fitted waistband but flares towards the hem

Alice band

A headband worn across the top of the head to keep the hair off the forehead. Named after Alice in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland

Angarakha

A double-breasted knee or hip length clothing with  a wrap opening.(Indian)

Aloha shirt

An Aloha shirt is also known as a Hawaiian shirt. It is a front button-down skirt with a convertible collar and a very loose casual fit. The print of aloha shirts is usually colorful and filled with motifs of the Hawaiian locality like pineapple.

Apple hats

It is a flat panelled (8 panels) cap with a covered central button on top and a narrow visor in the front; also known as newsboy hat. 

Apron

An overgarment covering usually the front part of the body, meant as a protective layer.

Apron dress

Also called Pinafore dress, Alice in wonderland dress; This dress has a bib front just like an apron with a short skirt attached to it, which goes around the lower body.

Armlet

Armband

A band of any fabric worn around the arm; may be used symbolically for a identifying with a purpose, identification or mourning.

Ascot

A neckscarf informally looped around the neck.

Babushka

Triangular folded handkerchief worn on head / hood tied under the chin

Baby Bonnet

 Lace bonnet for small kids.

Baby bunting

This is a cozy loose jumpsuit for babies with attached hood.

Baby doll dress

This is a yoke dress with an empire waistline and gathered lower portion with a lose fit ; it usually ends above the knee

Babykini

Bikini meant for kids

Baggy pants

Pants or trousers very loose at the hips and flared near the ankle. Also called Baggies.

Ball Gown

A formal full length dress usually intended for social occasions

Balmacaan

A single breasted overcoat with raglan sleeves and short roll collar.

Bandana

A cotton scarf often with a paisley pattern

Bandeau

A narrow band worn around the head to hold the hair in position.

Bandeau top

A fabric piece around the bust area forming a strapless top. It can be used as a swimsuit top.

Ballet skirt/ Ballerina skirt

A tulle skirt worn by the dancers of ballet. It is usually a below calf length skirt

Barfly apparel

Umbrella term for clothes that can be worn at a cocktail bar.

Barn jacket

A medium-weight overcoat made of durable cotton (usually twill) that normally has a corduroy collar and large front pockets. With wool or flannel lining.

Basque waistline

A dress with basque waistline has a waistline which dips in the centre forming a u or v shape towards the hipline.

Barrow coat

This is not a coat but a baby wrap. This is a fabric wrapped around the baby’s body, under the arms.

Belt

Bermuda Shorts

These are shorts which are worn 1 -3 inches above the knee. They are also known by names walking shorts and dress shorts

Bertha collar

Cape of fabric or lace attached to neckline for shawl effect.   

Bias Slip

A slip which is made of fabric cut on the bias.  

Bias skirt

A skirt which is cut on the bias. This cutting style results in a hip hugging flared hem skirt which is very flattering to most figures.

Bike Tards

A close-fitting, one-piece garment from the top of the torso to be hem of the shorts

Bikini

A two-piece type of women’s swimwear ; Consists of a bra and briefs

Bikini (V-Cut, French, String)

 Skimpier styles with narrow sides, including V-cut (in front), French cut (with high-cut sides) and low-cut String (with string sides)

Bishop sleeve

Full sleeve that ends in gathered band at wrist..

Bisht

An Arabian Overcoat. Also called Mishlah, this is a long white, brown or black cloak trimmed in gold that is worn over the thawb.

Blazer (sports jacket)

A lightweight single-breasted jacket usually of wool or silk, usually worn as a uniform. Usually embellished with an emblem from a club or school. 

Bloomers

An undergarment pants /Loose trousers gathered at the hem and waist. It may even end near the ankles.

Blouse

A woman’s shirt

Blouson

This is a type of blouse with Drooping fullness in fabric from bodice to waist; gathered at or below waist.   .

Bodycon dress

Also called bandage dress; This is a dress made of a very stretchy fabric and is body hugging. This short dress ends almost at knee length. The bandage dress will have many seams making it seem like you have wrapped a bandage over the body.

Bohemian style / Boho chic

This is a fashion style that takes inspiration from gypsy style characterized by loose-fitting clothes like peasant tops, maxi skirts headscarves, and ponchos with bright designs.

Bolero Jacket

A loose, waist-length jacket open at the front. Learn more about bolero jacket here.

Bomber jacket

A loose and short (waist-length) jacket with a fitted hem and cuffs. Also referred to as a flight jacket (A-2 Jacket), and typically made of leather with a sheepskin lining and a full collar. It has flap patch pockets shirt epauletes ribbed knitted wristlets and waistband. 

Bondage pants

A type of Punk inspired pants. It used to be made of plaid with two straps leading from the front along the waistline to the side of the knee and was decorated with zippers, straps, chains, rings and buckles. .

Bootcut

It refers to Jeans style which flares from the knees slightly to accommodate boots underneath.

Boots

A shoe with a tall upper that at least covers the ankle

Boyfriend cut

Women’s apparel cut with a menswear silhouette. Usually relaxed, oversized and cuffed.

A casual jeans with a semi fitted style. Usually will have distressing done and cuffs rolled up

Boyshorts

A panty or swimsuit bottom with maximum hip and back coverage.

Bow tie

A small necktie with two loops worn at the neck

Women’s underwear that covers and supports the breasts.

Bralette

A very feminine soft bra, cropped to the midriff, that is often all-over lace or lace trimmed..

Y-shaped underwear ; Full-coverage, to-the-waist panty, cut low on the thigh

Burkha

A loose all-enveloping outer garment covering the entire body, worn by some Muslim women. It has a cap that fits over the top of the head with grills over the eyes to see. This is worn over other clothing.

Burnoose

This is a long, loose hooded cloak worn by Arabs and Berbers in Africa.it was made of a coarse woollen fabric . This was worn over loose tunics

Bushirt sleeve

A small square shaped sleeve , with same width at armhole and lower edge

Bush Jacket

Cotton Jacket resembling shirt having four patch pockets and a waist belt

Business suit

Suit consisting of matching coat, trouser and sometimes a vest.

Bustier

A strapless garment similar to a corset that is like a combination waist cinch and brassiere. It ends at the waist or extends to the hips. It is worn as a woman’s top, is usually strapless, and may be made from highly ornamental fabric.

Bustle

This refers to a frame of padding that adds fullness to women’s skirts, gowns either at the sides, or at the back. This look is achieved through the use of different things added to the garment like a metal hoop, or projections, paddings etc. 

Button down shirt

Shirt fastened down with buttons.

Bicycle clothing

Clothing which is meant to be worn while cycling .

Brunswick

A hip-length, close-fitting padded coat with a neckline (Wikipedia)

Camisole / Camisole tops

In modern usage, the term may refer to any undergarment worn over a brassiere and ending at the waist.Blouses or tops that are cut in a style with broad straps, and tied at the upper edge with a drawstring are called camisole tops.

Something that covers the head

Cape

This is a wrap like garment that covers the shoulder. It has a flared look because of its circular cut.  

Capelet sleeve

Falls several inches below the elbow in soft flare

Capelet train

Train which Flows from back of shoulders.  

Capri Pants

Fairly straight-cut pants, tapered to the mid-calf.( above the ankle) ; also called the 3/4th

Cardigan

Front opened Knitted long sleeved upper body garment – it has a full length opening at the front fastened by a zip or buttons

Cargos

Trousers that end above the ankle but below the knee.

Car coat

A knee-length coat with a flat front placket. This coat was originally designed to make driving a car more comfortable.

Cardigan Jacket

A usually collarless sweater or jacket that opens the full length of the center front.

Cargo style

Usually loose-fitting pants or shorts with large, military-inspired pockets sewn on the hips and sides of the knees

Carpenter style

Pants or shorts with handy pockets and loops for holding tools commonly used by a carpenter.

Car wash skirt

This is a skirt with lots of slits along the hem and body

Catsuit

Tight fitting one-piece garment with long legs; a form fitting jumpsuit

Cathedral train

A train which extends three yards from the waist.  

Chemise

A loose-fitting, straight nightgown or undergarment or. A flirty little mini-slip in lengths that range from the top of the thigh to mid-thigh. Perfect for short skirts, asymmetrical or slit hemlines. Usually hits at mid thigh.(Skimmer)

Chesterfield coat

A semi fitted straight cut knee length coat in single or double breasted style; It usually has a velvet collar with a short notched lapel

Circle skirt

This is a skirt which is made by cutting a hole in the center of a circular piece of fabric – the resultant skirt will hug the waist and hips and will have great flare at the hem

Cloche

A special hat in the shape of a bell invented in 1908

Cloak

A loose outer garment.

Coat

An outer garment with sleeves, that is worn over other clothes, usually for warmth. It can be waist length or longer.

Cocktail dress

Refers to a style of dress meant for an evening or semi-formal function – it will be made of expensive fabric with embellishments – usually, it is of knee-length. 

Coif

A close-fitting cap, usually worn under other hats

Compression tights

Form fitting pants worn by athletes.

Co-ordinates

Separates which are matching and that when worn together for a complete look.

Cossack

A Russian style overblouse with a band collar and sash

Corset

A stiffened garment, usually with boning, designed to clinch the waist   that supported and shaped the torso. Principally a female fashion garment, but it used to be worn by men too. Usually has back-lacing and front fastening. Learn about the history of corsets here.

Court train

Extends a little under three feet from waist. 

Cover-up

A lightweight garment, such as a sarong, pareo, skirt or hooded jacket, used to cover a swimsuit.

Covert coat

A single breasted overcoat made of covert cloth in a tan color with a flapped pocket.

Cowl Neck style

Style with neckline featuring a piece of material attached to a garment at the neck, which may be used as a hood or draped loosely in a swag from shoulder to shoulder at the front neckline or back; Cowl can be seen in sleeves also

Cravat

A wide fabric band worn as a necktie that has long ends hanging down the chest

Crew neck

Tight Round neck of a sweater or t shirt

Cropped jacket

Jacket with Hem  cut just above the waist

Crop top

A short top which ends just below the breast .

Crop Top lingerie

A popular style borrowed from active-wear, this tailored tank-style bra top is cropped to midriff length.

Cufflinks

A decorative fastener used by men to fasten or link the two layers of a double cuff

Culottes

Knee length or slightly longer pants, also called shorts

Cummerbund

A formal and pleated broad waist sash which fits around the waist. It is usually worn with a tuxedo.

Debutante dress

A full length white (or shades of white) dress meant for a formal function like the coming out party of a debutante . The gown will be worn with elbow length white lacy gloves

Dickey

A detachable clothing worn around the neckline.

Dinner Jacket

A black jacket, a white shirt, black trousers, and a black bow tie.

Divided skirt

This skirt is one piece till the crotch line and then divided below

Djelleba

Moroccan hooded long sleeves thobes

Dolman sleeve

Top of sleeve is wide, cut in one piece with shoulder.  

Double breasted style jacket

 A jacket that closes on the front with an overlap. When the opening is closed two parallel rows of buttons are visible

Doublet

A style in cardigans and Jackets where the lapels drapes down in the front.

Dress

A garment that covers the upper body and hangs down to cover all or part of the legs

Dressing Gown

A long loose coat-like piece of clothing, usually worn before or after dressing

Dress Shirt

The button down front shirt with full length sleeves and single or french cuffs. The shirt has a stiff folded shirt collar

Drawers

A type of long underwear made of cotton or linen. Used in the 1500s.

Drindle skirt

Also called peasant skirt, gathered skirt, full skirt. This is a gathered skirt which falls below the knee

Drainpipe pant

This is an ankle-length pant that fits tight across the waist and hips and has narrow straight-cut legs. Usually, there are no front pockets on these pants; nor would they have pockets.

Dropped Waist / Low Waist style 

A waistline that is sewn below the body’s natural waistline.

Drop shoulder sleeved bodice

This bodice has sleeve with an extended armhole. Sleeve lies below the shoulder.

Duffel Coat

A short hooded coat fastened with wooden buttons and loops

Duster coat

A dress length overcoat.

Dupatta ( Odhani / Chunri)

Long scarves which are generally decorated along the border with embroidery and other embellishments used with Salwar Kameez

Dungarees

One piece top and trousers often made of denim;These pants have a bib which is attached to two loops coming from the center back of the pants, made of very thick material. The bib usually has a pocket

Eastern pants

Pants with gathered waist and flared bottom, a variation of Dhothi.

Eisenhower Jacket

A waist length jacket with convertible collar , full length sleeves and two front pockets on either side of the body; It is also called a battle jacket

Elephantine pants

This bell bottom type of pants is fitting at the waist and hips but flares to look similar to huge elephant legs.

Empire waistband/ empire line style

This high waistline begins just below the bust, giving tops or dresses a flowing, flattering fit. High waisted with short bodice. Skirt begins two or more inches above natural waist

Envelope waist style

A high waist line that folds over and forms a point like that of an envelope

Epaulet

An ornament worn on shoulder

Epaulet shirt

This is a simple shirt / blouse / top with an epaulette like straps on the shoulders.

Eton Jacket

A jacket with a very large stiff turnover collar.

Fanny wrap

Sash or cloth drapped at the hips

Fingerless gloves

Gloves which end where the fingers start. They usually have a loop to insert the thumb to keep it in place

Fishtail Train

Fitted around the hips and flares out from the knee to the hemline.

Fit and Flare skirt

This is a skirt which is quite fitting at the top portion and then flares abruptly at  the hem. Usually the flares start from the knee or mid calf for a long skirt. An example is a mermaid skirt

Fit & Flare clothing

In this type of dress the bodice will be fitting  and attached to a skirt which flares as it reaches the hemline

Flannel shirt

This is a shirt made of flannel – and hence very durable and warm.It was first made for workers and since then it has become quite fashionable with its rugged looks and reliable fabric

Flares

Another word for bellbottom pants. They fit tightly around the waist and hips and then flare out from the knee down.

Fleece

A top made from Fleece material

Foot socks / Footsies/ Footies

They are also known as booties or sneaker socks. Socks that just cover the feet ; they do not rise up to the ankles like normal socks.

French pantyhose

A panty with pantyhose attached.

Full Slips:

Full slips may be very tailored to create a smooth line under knits, or lavishly trimmed in lace at the bodice and hem.

Fur coat

A coat made of real furs like mink ermine or faux fur

Gaiter

A leg covering made from cloth or leather on boots or shoes extending from the instep of the foot to the midcalf or knee

Gallous

Garter Belts

A suspender belt worn at the waist or hips with attached garters to hold up stockings. Often coordinates with matching bras and bikinis.

Wedding Garter

A circle of ribbon or elastic that went around the upper leg.

Gartini

Gaucho pants

A wide flared pants which end at midcalf

Gibson sleeve

Full at shoulder, fitted at wrist.

Gilet

This is a sleeveless open front jacket, usually padded.

Girdle

A belt or cord worn round the waist, a woman’s elasticated corset extending from waist to thigh. The girdle itself could be made from metal, leather, fabric or cord and could be quite ornate, even decorated with jewels.

Gloves

Hand wear;A fitted covering for the hand, made of leather, cotton, wool or any other fabric, with a separate sheath for each finger and thumb

Gore (Gusset)

A triangular piece of material inserted in a garment to give extra width and more rounded contours. 

Gored skirt

This is usually a six paneled skirt with three panels in the front and three at the back; All the panels are of the same dimension

Granny Dress

A loose fitting below knee length one piece gathered waist dress with loose long sleeves gathered at the wrist.

Grunge

A messy style of dressy seen in people who follow or like grunge music

G string

A strip of triangular shaped cloth worn as an underwear supported by a waist cord.Buttocks are exposed and pantiline problem avoided with this clothing

Half slip

These are undergarments worn on the top part of the body or the bottom as an underskirt – under-see-through garments or to prevent the skirt from clinging. Half slips come in many lengths and may be smooth and tailored or lavishly trimmed with lace.

Hammer pants

A kind of loose sagging crotch pants, first meant to be worn for hip hop dancing.

Handkerchief skirt

Skirt with lower edge hanging like the tip of a handkerchief.

Harem pants

Loose Trousers with gathers in the waist and at the ankles. Originated in Arabia

Halterneck

 A style of neckline which is based on the raglan bodice, with the bodice hanging from a band on the neckline or neckties

Hat

An item of clothing that covers the head

Hawaiian shirt

A short sleeved bright tropical print shirt; typically has colourful fabric prints

Head dress

An elaborate covering for the head.

Henley shirt

A collarless knit top with a closure that stops midway down the shirt

Hijab

Headcover.

High waist

Also known as empire waist line, this waist line is very high usually in line with the bust line

High-Cut Brief

 A panty fitted to the waist and cut high on the leg to visually lengthen legs, minimize panty lines..

Hip hugger

Pants or skirts with the waist line resting on the hips

Hip rider skirt

A two tier skirt with the upper tier fitting tightly around the waist and hips and lower tier has gathers or pleats

Hipster

A panty worn low at the hip bones and cut higher on the sides..

Hippie style

Style characterized by long hair Beards jeans and psychedelic colours

Hobble skirt

A skirt with a very narrow hem (even constricting movement).

Hollywood Waistband

Characterized by a full elasticized back and a side zipper or button closure

Hoop skirt

A skirt stiffened with hoop. A bell-shaped understructure to carry petticoats in a wide circumference around the body; usually made out of linen with whalebone or cane
